We are currently finishing our first round of analysis and will be posting our first recognized mitral valve repair reference centers in the coming months. Please check back soon.
The recommended treatment for degenerative mitral valve disease is mitral valve reconstruction, as opposed to valve replacement with a bioprosthetic or mechanical valve, because valve repair is associated with improved survival and fewer long-term complications. Unfortunately, too many patients who would benefit from repair receive replacement valves, with higher rates of death or complications within five years after surgery.
Physicians and patients need a way to differentiate hospitals and surgeons who have mastered complex mitral valve reconstruction and have consistently delivered high quality outcomes. This program meets that need.
The Mitral Valve Repair Reference Center Award Program was created to provide patients and referring physicians with the resources needed to make a well-informed choice regarding the best heart team for mitral valve repair surgery. This award makes it easier for patients to identify the nation’s best surgeons and hospitals for mitral valve repair surgery.
